Spirit of the Maker Pottery Demonstration by Linda Sten

Meredith,  NH – The League of NH Craftsmen Meredith Retail Gallery is pleased to host a “Spirit of the Maker” pottery-making demonstration by master craftsman Linda Sten on Sunday, September 18th, from 1pm – 3pm. The public is invited to meet and speak with Linda and see her technique. The Meredith Gallery is located at 279 Daniel Webster Hwy, next to the Inn at Church Landing.

Linda is one of the many juried League members that are participating in the League of NH Craftsmen’s Spirit of the Maker Demonstrator Series. This series was created to educate the public about the skills and artistry involved in making fine handcraft.

Linda, who lives in Madbury, NH, has been working in clay for more than 20 years. Her functional hand built and thrown pieces feature brightly colored, textured surfaces. She uses handmade stamps and found objects to give the clay an overall pattern and texture. Linda’s colorful platters are made by layering a textured slab with “slip,” a liquid form of clay that can be colored. When dry, she uses steel wool to scrub the platter, wearing away the slip on high spots, but leaving the bright colors in the indentations of the platter. The pieces are glazed with a clear glaze.

Linda grew up making things with her hands – sewing, woodworking, and cooking. She was intrigued by clay and took classes at the Maine College of Art, North Country Studio Workshops and the Vermont Clay Studio, among others. As the education director at a former League of NH Craftsmen Retail Gallery, she saw that people were making a living selling their craft, so she started selling her pots in 1999. Making pots was a flexible job and fit in with raising a family. She now teaches workshops and classes for children and adults and her work is sold in galleries in New England. She has been a juried member of the League since 2004.

The League of NH Craftsmen celebrates the “spirit of the maker” by encouraging and promoting the creation, use and preservation of fine contemporary and traditional hand craft. The League of NH Craftsmen Meredith Gallery is proud to sell the fine handcraft of the League’s juried members, whose work has meet the League’s signature of excellence – its rigorous standards for self expression, vision, and quality craftsmanship.
